Why I secretly HATE Halloween...

I have hated Halloween for the last 30 years. My first Halloween memory is when I was 3. I wanted to be wonder woman (it was the 70's what girl didn't want to be her back then). I wanted a costume that looked like this:

Lynda Carter's REAL DEAL: Gold tie belt, two gold wristbands, red tall go-go boots, a blue bathing suit bottom with a red tank top and topped off with a gold crown. In my head it was amazing and fabulous.

I looked like this...

A one job plastic wrap topped off with a mask (not even a fake gold crown  oh come on...).  I can remember telling  my mom that I wanted to be Wonder Woman with all the bells and whistles and she told me she couldn't sew such a costume for me.

It didn't get much better for me the next Halloween as I was a plastic wrap Casper the friendly ghost (sorry no picture).
My mom lacks creativity, I  however don't and was frustrated as a kid.

The following year was a little better, I was a witch...

And I actually looked like one.

A couple of years later I wanted to be something my mom couldn't sew again so I tried to sew it myself...

A-Huge-Colossal-failure but I am smiling anyway because I made it. I was so stinking proud that I made that jar of jelly beans?

I have avoided most Halloween parties, gatherings, and functions ever since.

THE TURNING POINT:

At 33, my 1st born was suppose to be born on Halloween, the irony. He came 10 days early but I vowed while I was pregnant that I would change my attitude about Halloween to a more positive one.

This year his party will be Halloween themed, with all the bells and whistles. I'm pretty sure his costume will look like the real deal and with pinterest by my side, I am good to go with decorations and party favors!

  1. Your jelly-bean costume rocked! You had that creativity back then, didn't you ;) My poor non-sewing mom went through the same thing with me... the costumes never lived up to my vision and she knew it.

  2. Aw, I wish I could go back in time and share my Wonder Woman costume with you. My mom sewed. I had the gold wristbands (which were itchy, but I didn't care) and everything. Even fake boots. The wig was itchy too, but I still rocked it. Even when I had to put a coat over it because it was freezing! Sigh. But I would have shared. My mom passed her love of doing us up for Halloween on to me. I never buy it if I can help it. I'm on year seven of creating Halloween costumes. It's the only part of Halloween I like. Well, and the candy. I hate all the horror movie stuff though.

  4. I think your Jellybean costume was cute! My mom didn't sew so one year I wanted to be a ghost. She cut two holes in a sheet. Normal right? Ya except the sheet was floral print. Thanks for sharing! Stopping by from Blue Cricket design

  5. Your jelly bean costume was so cute and even more awesome since you made it yourself! It reminds me of the year I wanted to be a Hershey Kiss. My mom made the share out of poster board and I covered it in foil.

  7. Hi
Your right every girl wanted to be Wonder Woman even little Aussie girls. We don't have Halloween in Australia, thankfully, because I'm your mum. I have no creativity either but luckily for me my daughter isn't a 'dress up' type of girl which saves me big time.
